Ducks have a total of four limbs, two legs, and two wings. The two legs of all breeds of ducks are located under their body and are connected directly to their hip bone. Both the left and right legs of ducks are identical in appearance and function.
Duck’s feet have a thick layer of skin that is attached to their feet. This makes ducks walk quietly when they land on water or walk on land. All birds have feathers to keep them

How Do Ducks’ Legs Work?

Ducks’ legs are not just for standing. When ducks swim, they kick their legs up and down as they swim. This helps them to move away from dangers or places where they feel threatened.
When ducks rest, they fold their legs under their body and rest on their ankles. This allows them to sleep very comfortably. Ducks’ legs are also used to help them get out of the water if a predator grabs one of their legs. They use one leg and stretch it out of the water and drag the other leg into the water just like a turtle does when it swims for its shell.
The legs also play a part in the mechanics of flying: when a duck takes off from water, it moves its big wings (which cover about 80% of its body) before using its legs to get started flying. It then uses its long legs to accelerate toward the sky. When ducks are swimming, they use their feet as if they were propellers – This helps them to swim fast or glide through water with grace and speed.
Why Are Ducks Legs Bowed?
This is not uncommon to see, the main reason why you might find bowed legs on ducks is a niacin deficiency. For example, ducks that were raised on a high protein diet (which includes chicken) can have this problem. This deficiency can also occur when ducks are fed only corn or other foods that are not energy rich.
Niacin (vitamin b3) is one of the most important vitamins for the proper health of a duck’s coat and skin. This vitamin is essential to the healthy and glossy look of a duck’s plumage. Niacin deficiency results in a very thin and scraggly bird, which is not a good thing for any duck owner.
Why Are Ducks Legs Peeling?
Ducks must have a proper diet in order for their skin to stay smooth and healthy. Ducks can also develop minor skin problems such as peeling of the legs when they are not getting the proper nutrition from their diet. There are different causes of this serious problem, mainly dehydration but could have different other causes such as:
- The duck is eating a poor quality feed or its feed has too much fat in it (this is a common problem)
- The duck’s diet does not contain certain vitamins and minerals (the main one is Vitamin D3 which your ducks need to grow healthy layers of feathers)
- The ingredients in the duck’s food are not balanced

Why Are Ducks Legs Orange?
The color is due to hormonal reasons, the change in hormone levels causes the color of their legs (and bills) to shift. This change is prevalent in specific periods of the year, likely between December and January due to the beginning of the mating season.
In this time of the year, ducks become more sexually active, so it is only natural for them to experience an increase in the levels of hormones in their bodies.

Do Ducks Have Feet?
Ducks do indeed have feet.
The duck feet are composed of three bones: the tarsus, the metatarsus, and the phalanges. The tarsus is located in the middle of the foot and is used to support the rest of the foot. The metatarsus is where the toes are located and provides a place for the muscles to attach to.
The phalanges are bones located on each leg, on either side of the tarsus and metatarsus, and each phalange ends with a claw. In both ducks and geese, these bones do not have any nerve endings and are merely touch sensitive. Ducks also have no ability to feel pain or cold (other than by contact with other objects).
The lower part of the foot is always made up of five toes. The upper three toes are sharp beak-like structures that help to keep ducks balanced when they are standing on land.
Ducks have forward-facing feet as they have to keep their weight off the bottom of the water body. And, like most other birds, do not have a strong grasp on the ground so their feet help them get around easily on land.
